An old favorite, there is hardly a bluer fish than the venerable blue tang. Blue tangs are energetic and oftentimes feisty fish that adapt well to larger aquaria. Not only is this beautiful animal completely reef-safe, but it also is a heavy grazer that helps to control nuisance green algae benthic algae. Juveniles feed primarily on zooplankton, but rely increasingly upon algae as they mature. It never feeds on coral and may indeed be beneficial by feeding on algae that could otherwise outgrow and smother out corals. Care should be taken by the aquarist to avoid the caudal spine, which is located just in front of the tail and can cause considerable injury. See below for more information.
